EUROPEAN UNION'S CHILUNGAMO (JUSTICE & ACCOUNTABILITY) PROGRAM CLOSES

Office of the Ombudsman is attending closing symposium of the 5 year Justice and Accountability Programme called  Chilungamo at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

Through the program, Office of the Ombudsman received over K1 bn to implement seven main activities which were packaged into four strategic areas of Resolution of backlog of cases, Public awareness, Stakeholder engagement and Capacity building.

At the end of the program, Office of the Ombudsman redused its backlog of by over 300 percent, recorded 5,500 Hospital Ombudsman Initiative cases out of which 4,719 were resolved, conducted 260  Mobile Accintability Clinics and ultimately, closed to 10 million people were  other milestones.

Chilungamo Program also significantly supported production of the 2022-2027 strategic plan and review of the current Ombudsman Act.

Speaking ahead of the closure of the programme, Her Honour Ombudsman Grace Malera was ever grateful to the program and expressed hope that the successor Chilungamo 2 program will help the office register even greater success.

"The European Union has proved to be a a very reliable partner who provides holistic support towards creation of a responsive and transparent public service. Going forward with Chilungamo 2, we will not be starting from the scratch. Most of the ground work has been done and we know what worked and what didn't work.We therefore will be consolidating the gains we have already made and fully execute our constitutional mandate mandate," she said.
